Description of the Land
|
Controlling five square miles of the rolling highlands of Catron County, New Mexico, Mariano Mesa Ranch occupies the heart of trophy elk country. A combination of milder winters and a diverse mosaic of pinon pine, alligator juniper and shrub and grasslands produces some of the best elk hunting in the state. Bulls in the 330-plus class are regularly taken in the area, and 400-class animals are not unheard of. Trophy elk are the big attraction here, but mule deer, antelope, black bear and mountain lion also provide outstanding opportunities.
Forested mesas, secluded valleys and rolling grasslands comprise the 2,640 deeded and 560 BLM-leased acres of Mariano Mesa Ranch, at elevations from 7400 to 7800 feet. Three wells are in place that feed watering holes for livestock and wildlife. With power and phone already on the property, development possibilities are abundant, or the ranch may simply be maintained "as is" as a pristine hunting or wildlife preserve. Very private, but accessible year-round, the ranch lies 15 miles northeast of Quemado and U.S. Highway 60, and 150 miles from Albuquerque.
