Looking for a quality hunting ranch, family ranch or retreat in New Mexico ? Look no further. This family ranch located in the Zuni mountains of NM is ready to go. It is located 100 miles west of Albq. NM between Gallup and Grants NM 4 miles south of I-40. It has year-round excess provided by paved state road 612, but provides private seclusion at the same time. It is bordered by Cibola National Forest on two sides, Bluewater lake State park, state lands and a large private ranch.
Water is plentiful on the ranch. It has Springs, Cottonwood creek and Sawyer creek run through it along with a number of other canyons that have seasonal water and rock water holes. There are two windmills,a number of dirt tanks and also flowing wells on the ranch.
The cattle were removed 12 years ago and a wildlife management plan put in place to improve the wildlife habitat and Mule deer and Elk herds on the ranch. Since then a number of hunting shows have featured the ranch hunts, the ranch was awarded Ranch of the Year for it's conservation and commitment to wildlfe. It is home to some truely trophy elk and deer. The ranch was placed in the Special Managemnt Properties program by the state of NM because of our dedication to wildlife and are now able to dictate how many elk tags we recieve each year. The elk hunts have been kept at a very limited number( 6 bow hunts and 6 rifle hunts)to insure the growth and quality of the animals. We have only used hunting as a management tool and required that hunters only harvest older fully mature bulls. That has allowed hunters to harvest 380 plus bulls. We have only had 7 mule deer hunts since 1999, and are now seeing some older non-typical bucks roam the property.
The ranch has over 100 indian sites, burial sites and Kivas. Pottery dating back thousands of years can be seen laying on the ground at these sites. All sites are undisturbed and have been protected.
The ranch is mixure of red rock cliff lines, wide open meadows and valleys, thick stands of ponderosa pine, pinion pine, junipers and oak trees. The native grasses are thick and lush on most parts of the ranch due to the removal of cattle. These grass filled valleys attract large herds of elk and deer off of the national forest during hunting season. The rut is a time to rejoice here with the sounds of screaming bulls everywhere.
Water is plentiful. The ranch has a number of springs, rock water holes, flowing wells, 2 windmills, dirt tanks and creeks that run through it. It also has a very unique native wetlands that the state wants to put in to a conservation easement.
There are a number of land trusts that have contacted the owners with an interest in putting the ranch in conservation easements. These easements would not only insure that the ranch stays in it's pristine condition, but also provide considerable tax revenue for the owners. The owners would also be able to sell the tax credits if they chose. To date no conservation easements have been established on the ranch. Wildlife conservation and land improvement projects are in place now that are providing income and funding for future projects. The ranch has established contacts and has a positive relationship with private, county, state and federal agentcies that help provide funding and guidence in wildlife projects.
