Cibola County Lee Scholes / John Conger New Mexico Outdoor Properties / Ranch and Management Services

Type: Acreage

The 5,187-Deeded acre Seco Canyon Ranch is located in one of the most culturally and historically diverse areas of New Mexico. Nestled on the southeast corner of Mount Taylor, Seco Canyon Ranch sits high above the surrounding terrain in the shadow of the Mountain just 60 minutes West of Albuquerque International Airport. The earliest human habitation occurred during the Paleo-Indian period; later inhabitants were the Anasazi Indians, forebears of the later Pueblo Indians. Seco Canyon Ranch was originally part of the Cebolleta Land Grant issued by the colonial Spanish government in the 1800s to 30 colonists from the Albuquerque area. Now spelled Seboyeta, the small community was settled in 1749 after a contingent of Navajos went to Santa Fe and agreed to the establishment of a mission on their lands; the site chosen was on the southeast side of Mount Taylor. Following acquisition of the region by the U.S. in 1848, the area was known as a notorious hangout for Mexican Traders and bandits dealing in slaves, whiskey, and guns and with the increasing conflict between Navajos and settlers prompted the construction of an Army post in the area to control the raiding. The first post was established at Cebolleta in 1849 and was abandoned two years later. Several hundred descendants of the original Land Grantees continue to inhabit the area. Present day Seco Canyon Mesa Ranch was deeded to the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad (APRR), at the end of the nineteenth century and was established as a ranch in the 1930's when the APRR sold the land. The ranch changed hands several times and today is used for cattle and big-game hunting. The Ranch hosts herds of Elk, Mule Deer, and a small herd of wild horses. The Ranch is accessed by 2 track roads and horseback. Seco Canyon Ranch offers large, picturesque mesas, open meadows, rock formations, Indian Ruins, and volcanic bluffs. Elevations range from 6,100 feet on the lower portions to over 7,980 feet in the high country. About 2.6 million years ago, there was an eruption from a summit above the present Mount Taylor crater. The flows formed cliffs and capped the sides of the cone. The mesas were formed when flow from the basalt cinder cones around the base of Mount Taylor coated the surrounding land with a protective cap. These mesas now makeup a major part of the Mount Taylor volcanic field. There are a number of volcanic "necks" or plugs within view of the Ranch. These necks were formed as lava solidified in the pipe of an extinct volcano, and erosion, over time, wore away the cinder cones. This beautiful and varied environment of diverse landforms creates diverse vegetation and a rich habitat range. Vegetation within the Property consists of numerous grasses, flowering species, and tree types including Pinion Pine and Ponderosa Pine. Average annual rainfall on the Ranch ranges from 12 to 20in this high country. The Propertys mesa tops serve as critical habitat for maintaining the valuable elk herd while shrub and brush in the mid elevations support deer, bear and a majority of the remaining species. The Ranchs country provides critical winter range for all species including elk. The Ranchs diverse pool of wildlife includes Mule Deer, Black Bear, Mountain Lion, Barbary Sheep, Gamble Quail, Morning Dove and Merian Turkey. In addition, a herd of wild horses can often be seen on the Propertys upper mesas. The most prevalent wildlife species, however, is the Rocky Mountain Elk - Seco Canyon Ranch is home to some of the nicest Elk in the United States.
