This diverse expanse of 9,000 total acres is located in what is known as the boot-hill of southwestern Chaves County. It is the heart of the historical Hinkle C Bar Ranch. Rio Penasco is supplied by vast water shed. Its origins are from the high sierras of the sacred Sacramento Mountains which drains easterly towards the Pecos River. Snow melt, seasonal rains, and large volume springs charge this perennial mountain stream.
The Mesilla Valley Fly Fishing Club has historically leased up stream water developing notable catch and release trout waters enhanced by stocking the stream with feisty Brown and Rainbow Trout.
Rio Penasco Ranch river bottomland and vast upland rangesites thrive with mule deer, Barbary sheep, turkey, with occasional bear and elk. This is also important rangeland historically utilized for livestock grazing supporting up to 150 animal units yearlong. The ranch is fenced and cross fenced into 10 pastures. U.S. Highway 82 divides the ranch into two distinct land areas. Livestock water is supplied by two shallow high volume water wells equipped with electric submersible pumps. These wells supply the entire ranch with over 100,000 linear feet of black plastic fasline for water delivery to a multiple of storages and water troughs. Structural improvements include the highway all metal barn with enclosed apartment.
Hidden from view is Oak Grove camp ground. This beautiful riverside park is sheltered beneath massive oak trees guarded with a towering limestone wall ascending from the Penasco. Oak Grove is a fishermans haven complete with RV camp hookups, electric service, lights, and a domestic water supply with hydrants.
The mountain range sites are rise from the river at 5,300 feet climbing to 6,100 feet across limestone hills, canyons, and uplands. Vegetation includes many grasses, juniper, and pion pine. The scenic river valley is cloaked with cottonwood, willow, and walnut trees.
