This represents 1.1 million acres of land for sale in the state (accounting for around one percent of the state's land). Of the 33 counties in New Mexico, Lincoln County had the most land and rural real estate for sale. The most expensive piece of land listed for sale in New Mexico on Lands of America recently was $35 million, though the median price for farms, ranches and other land for sale in New Mexico came in at $324,262. The average price of land and rural property for sale in New Mexico was $786,646. There was 58,610 acres of sold land in New Mexico recorded in September 2018 through the Lands of America sales program. This reflects a six percent increase in sales activity over the previous month. The total value of this sold land and rural real estate was $6.2 million. Lincoln County recorded the most land sales recently in the state. The Bureau of Land Management oversees most outdoor recreation on over 13 million acres of New Mexico land. Popular activities include hunting, fishing, horseback riding and OHVing (indeed, an all-terrain vehicle is a necessity in many areas given the tough, rugged terrain). As befits a state with excellent hunting for big and small game like deer, waterfowl and wild turkey, hunting land was the most common type of land for sale in New Mexico. New Mexico is the fifth-biggest state in the United States, covering an area of 121,598 square miles (78 million acres). In total, 121,298 square miles (100 percent) is land, while the remaining 292 square miles is made up of water.
