Lands of America recently had $833 million in farms, ranches and other land for sale in the Cotton State. This represents some 1.1 million acres of New Mexico land for sale (accounting for about one percent of land in the state). The most expensive property listed for sale on Lands of America recently was $35 million, although the median price for land for sale in New Mexico came in at $247,660. The average price of land advertised for sale in New Mexico was $641,891. There was 11,276 acres of sold land in New Mexico recorded last month through the Lands of America sales program. This reflects an increase in sales activity over data from the previous period. The total value of this sold land and rural real estate was $3.2 million. The Bureau of Land Management oversees most outdoor recreation on over 13 million acres of New Mexico land. Popular activities include hunting, fishing, horseback riding and OHVing (indeed, an all-terrain vehicle is a necessity in many areas given the tough and rugged terrain). New Mexico is the fifth-biggest state in the United States, covering an area of 121,598 square miles (78 million acres). Of its total landmass, 121,298 square miles (100 percent) of the state is land, while the remaining 292 square miles is made up of water. Over half the land in New Mexico is public land such as state parks, forestland or state and other federally protected land. As befits a state with excellent hunting for big and small game like deer, waterfowl and wild turkey, hunting land was the most common type of land for sale in New Mexico. Of the 33 counties in the state, Rio Arriba County had the most land and acreage for sale.
